Fabric
History
Silk is a natural fiber derived from silkworms (cocoons) in 3000 B.C in China.
The wife of the Yellow Emperor, Leizu, first invented the process of making silk cloth.
Since then, it has had a long trading history across the world, connected industries from the East to the West via the Silk Road.
Silk was initially reserved only for the Emperors, later traded as a form of currency.
Silk is one of the luxurious and high-end textile fabrics due to its high-cost production.
Surface
Silk has an incredibly soft feel, shininess, and luster.
The fabric has an elegant appearance, shine, and durability.
Hold
Silk has amazing absorptive qualities that handle moisture well.
The raw silk is primarily made of a protein called fibrin, woven or knit into a fabric or spun into yarn to get the soft and lightweight texture.
Crease
Silk is fairly crease-free, has low conductive properties, and has a moisture-absorbent nature.
Transparency
Silk is extremely breathable.
The fabric does not conduct elasticity, moreover, it can experience a lot of static.
Drape
Silk has a flattering drape and shine.
The fabric is great for both summer and winter clothing.
Stretch
Silk, nevertheless, is one of the strongest fibers.
Cotton is blended to give silk a sturdy look.
Production
Silk is grown from the natural silkworm.
The production of Raw Silk is biodegradable, involves sustainable practices, consequently, environmentally-friendly.
Maintenance
Hand Wash
Hand washing is highly recommended.
Avoid the use of bleach or any other harsh chemicals.
Use a mild silk-friendly detergent and fabric conditioner.
Soak it in a tub filled with cold water (no more than 20 minutes), and move it around to let the soap distribute evenly.
Gently press the dress while still wet to remove excess water and rinse.
Machine Wash
The dress belt loops are attached with shell buttons that are sensitive to machine wash and tend to break if pressure is applied.
For buttons and dress longevity, hand washing is highly recommended.
In the case of machine wash, avoid the use of bleach or any other harsh chemicals.
Turn the dress inside out. Use a very gentle detergent and select the delicate cycle.
The water temperature should be cold and the spin is on low.
Dry Cleaning
Dry cleaning is preferable for greasy stains.
Air Drying
Use a flat surface to dry on a clean towel. Avoid drying it in the dryer.
Do not hang or wring, as the dress can lose shape easily.
Shrinking
Usually, raw silk can naturally shrink. The fabric is pre-shrunk before sewing.
Ironing
Use a steamer to get the creases out.
Avoid ironing wet dress or spraying to prevent water-stains.
In the case of ironing, let it completely dry.
Put the thick terry towel or cloth between the silk and the iron.
Flip the dress inside out and set the iron to low heat.
